My Body Holds My Story, My Movement Is My Art.

Dancing Through Welsh Art: A Journey of Identity, Culture & Creativity

Heart Beats Movement & Music creative dance workshop at the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru | The National Library of Wales focussed on their exhibition "No Welsh Art".

Since the 1980s the art historian and exhibition curator, Peter Lord, has been exploring the myth that there is ‘no Welsh art’, discovering and recording Welsh art and artists.

The exhibition serves as a response to the allegation made by Griffith in 1950, and upheld by many others afterwards: “So much for the past. No patron, no critic, therefore no painter, no sculptor, no Welsh Art. It is as simple as that.”

I worked with the DymaNi young adults with disabilities group to explore the themes of the exhibition by:

1. Challenging the myth that Wales has no strong artistic tradition through embodied movement
2. Exploring Welsh identity, culture, and history through dance, inspired by themes from the exhibition
3. Fostering creativity, self-expression, and connection in a safe and inclusive space

Aber i Aber Aberarth

The Aber i Aber project in Aberarth was a 3 month collaborative project between Community Music Wales, Heart Beats Movement & Music For Every Body and the Dyma Ni group for disabled people aged 17–30 funded by Arts Council of Wales.

Through the project we explored the environment, the birth of Taliesin and transformation through art, music and dance on the West Wales coast.

Aber I Aber was a participatory project using music to explore the unique challenges and stories of communities living near estuaries around the Welsh coast.

From the River Severn, the Gateway to Wales, all the way to Holyhead and its connection to Ireland, we embarked on a journey through environmental diversity, climate change impacts, socio-economic issues, myths and legends, smuggling tales, and the effects of tourism on local communities and their languages.

Music for Memories project

Heart Beats Movement and Music For Every Body worked with the HAHAV Caffi Cofion Group for 12 weeks between January and April 2024 funded by Haul Arts in Health.

By interviewing the group members living with dementia we created personal playlists of music to revisit precious memories using the magic of personally meaningful music.
